On one of our recent jobs, we met a wonderful, older dog named George. We regularly work in people’s homes-many of whom have animals. One of the things that we appreciated about George was that when he greeted our electricians at the door, he did not jump all over them, as is sometimes the case with younger dogs.
We were doing quite a bit of work at the client’s home: a panel upgrade, surge protection, and a complete aluminum rejuvenation. The work was completed over the course of two days, and George kept a close eye on us, always checking on our work.
As we would walk up the stairs, he would be lying across the top, stretched out. But George was a real sweetheart – we would politely ask him “George, we need to squeeze by,” and he seemed to understand and always oblige. Of course, five minutes later, we would ask him once again.
One of our electricians, Dave, took George out back, and threw a ball around with him for a little while. As he was older, he would get tired after a short time, and want to come back inside. Then he would resume his position watching us as we worked.
George seemed happy that we were there keeping him company. When it came time to leave though, he could sense we were packing up. He had always been in our way, or at least somewhere we could see him. Now though, he had turned his back on us! He was lying in his blanket sadly, with his back turned away. He wouldn’t even turn his head when we called his name!
It is amazing what animals can sense, and how they can so often react just as a human would. George reminded us so much of a child that realizes that the fun is about to end, and becomes a little downhearted. We hope that George wasn’t too disappointed, and that we can visit him again soon.
